Simon is a 50-year-old farmer in Nkubu county, in Kenya, where he lives with his wife and six children. Only four of the children are still schooling. Simon has been in farming for the past ten years, producing milk and vegetables which he sells at the local market.
He is requesting a KES 60,000 loan from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase materials for constructing a zero-grazing unit and to buy a chaff cutter which will help in getting more milk produce. Simon will earn extra income from selling the milk. This will help him uplift his living standards and pay for his children's schooling. He aspires to buy a one-acre piece of land in the next five years.
Lack of readily available market for his products, pests, and diseases are his major challenges in farming. He is thankful to Juhudi Kilimo for giving him the loan.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
