Ran is an original citizen from Moung Russey district of Battambang Province, Cambodia. She is 27 years old and married and blessed with three children who depend on her. One of them is in school and the remaining two are too young for schooling.

To deal with daily costs of living, she and her husband manage two hectares of rice farming and another two hectares of sesame. Sometimes, for extra income, her husband also uses his spare time to work for others for a fee.

The business that she has engaged in for five years has helped her to earn up to 22,500 KHR per day. Ran has been with VisionFund for three loan cycle already. She has used her loans wisely to upgrade her living conditions as well as to maintain her business.

Now, in a group of three, she is a leader. The entire loan amount of her group is 3,800,000 KHR. Ran, whose loan portion is 1,400,000 KHR, is going to spend her loan on paying those she has hired to harvest her crop and purchasing fertilizer and insecticide for her sesame field.

She hopes to gather her production in a timely way so that she can make more profit and sustain her living.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
