Catherine Njeri is a member of Shakaina Women's Group in Thika, Central Kenya. She is married and has four children ranging in age between three and eleven years old.
She has a small business near her home where she sells paraffin and is able to earn $5 per day. Through her group, she intends to take a loan to expand her business by stocking solar lanterns. This will increase her income to $8 per day, and the added income will be used to improve the living standards of her family. She will also be able to repay the loan.
Catherine chose to stock solar lamps after attending a training for promotion of renewable energy. With these lamps she hopes to encourage other women to replace their kerosene lanterns with solar lanterns that eliminate smoke, save money, and reduce risk of fires and burns.
