This Communal Bank is called "Ladies and Workers" and is made up of 20 entrepreneurs who work in different fields. Among them are the following: Handicrafts, school transport, honey sales, fast food, clothing sales, beauty products, firewood, knick-knacks, hair-dressers, weaving, sewing drapes and tablecloths, sewing in general, and other services. All of the members live in the city of Puerto Montt.

Maria Teresa is one of the members of the Communal Bank. In the photo she can be found standing in the first row in the first place looking from left to right, and dressed in a red colored vest and a grey jacket with brown clear fringes. Her hair is dark brown and she wears it loose.

She works in a kiosk and has been doing this for 9 years. She comments that she works from Monday to Monday beginning at 9am and working until midnight. She sells daily papers, magazines, ice cream, candies, and soft drinks.

The products that she needs like the papers are brought directly to her kiosk by an agency. The magazines she purchases in the market of Puerto Montt, along with the ice creams, drinks, and candies, which she buys at different supermarkets at a low cost. That makes them convenient economically.

With the loan she will buy one percent more of the newspapers, ice creams and candies.

One of María Teresa's goals is to grow the business and be able to put up another kiosk in another zone, and in that way generate greater income in order to improve her quality of life.

María Teresa lives together with her husband and a 13 year-old son. Her dreams for the family are to give her son the best education so that in the future he will have a profession.

She is very happy and thankful for the opportunity offered by Fondo Esperanza, since it will allow her to invest in her business. With respect to the Communal Banking group that she forms a part of, she comments that in her group they have very good communication. Also, the trainings have helped her learn new strategies for sales and accounting.

Puerto Montt is a city in the south of Chile, located in the region of The Lakes (Los Lagos). Some of the attractions of Puerto Montt are the beautiful green landscapes; It's beaches are very secluded; It is also known for its food, especially the fish and seafood, as well as for its handicrafts. It is also the port of entry to the Island "Grande de Chiloé," which is rich in traditions and legends.

Este Banco Comunal se llama “Damas y Obrero” está conformado por 20 emprendedores quienes se dedican a diferentes rubros, entre los cuales se encuentran; artesanía, transporte escolar, venta de miel, comida rápida, venta de ropa, productos de belleza, leña, bazar, peluquería, tejidos, confección de cortinas y manteles, costuras, servicios entre otros. Todos ellos pertenecientes a la ciudad de Puerto Montt.
Maria Teresa, integrante del grupo del Banco Comunal, quien en la foto se encuentra de pie en primera fila, ocupando el primer lugar de izquierda a derecha, viste un chaleco de color rojo, una chaqueta de color gris con franjas de color café claro, su pelo es de color castaño oscuro y lo usa suelto.
Ella se dedica al rubro de venta de kiosko, desde hace 9 años. Comenta que trabaja de lunes a lunes desde las 9ºº horas hasta las 00ºº horas, tiene diarios, revistas, helado, dulces, bebidas.
La mercadería e insumos que va necesitando como los diarios se los trae una agencia directamente a su kiosko, las revistas las compra en el centro de Puerto Montt, y los helados, bebidas y confites en diferentes supermercados a bajo costo, por lo tanto conveniente económicamente.
Con el crédito comprará un porcentaje más de diarios, helados y confites.
Una de las metas de Maria Teresa es crecer y poder colocar otro local con otro rubro, así con esto generar mayores ingresos para optar a una mejor calidad de vida.
Maria Teresa vive junto a su esposo y un hijo de 13 años e edad. Sus sueños a nivel familiar es darle lo mejor a su hijo en educación para que el dia de mañana tenga una profesión.
Ella se encuentra muy contenta y agradecida de la oportunidad brindada por Fondo Esperanza, ya que le permitirá invertir en su negocio. Respecto al grupo del Banco Comunal del cual forma parte, comenta que en éste existe muy buena comunicación. Por otro lado las capacitaciones, le han servido para aprender nuevas estrategias de venta y contabilidad.
Puerto Montt es una ciudad del sur de Chile, ubicada en la región de Los Lagos. Una de las atracciones de Puerto Montt son sus bellos paisajes verdes; sus playas poco frecuentadas; su gastronomía y especialmente la reputación de sus pescados y mariscos y sus artesanías. Es también la puerta de entrada a la Isla Grande de Chiloé, rica en tradiciones y leyendas.

About Fondo Esperanza

Fondo Esperanza (FE) is a private non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurship by providing micro-credit and training to people living in poverty in well over 100 cities throughout Chile. By providing these services, FE aims to improve the living conditions of the entrepreneurs and their families. In 2010, FE provided loans to more than 41,000 entrepreneurs. It utilizes a communal banking model in which groups of 18 to 25 clients meet on regularly and guarantee each other’s loans. The members use their portion of the loan to create or expand their own businesses. In the group meetings, clients receive training though the FE Entrepreneurship School, which enhances clients’ personal and business skills and ability to work in groups.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
