The “Nueva Esperanza” [New Hope] Group was started through promotions in the neighborhood. All of the members are acquaintances and neighbors from the same neighborhood. Each member has the same objective, which is to work, to encourage the spirit of solidarity and to achieve the highest level of the program.

Petrona is the president of the group. With previous loans she renovated her house to install a snack bar. Since then her business has grown due to the effort and determination she has put into it. Her wish is to continue working with the foundation, because with her previous loans she was able to open her snack bar and help her children finish secondary school and study in university.

She is requesting this loan to buy supplies for her snack bar, such as drinks, greens, condiments, baked goods, vegetables and others.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
