Bilakoro Group

The Bilakoro group is made up of 7 married women and 2 widows who have an average age of 41 and, on average, 4 children. They mainly live in traditional family environments in the district of Niebala, Bougouni town. They got to know each other thanks to neighbourly relationships, friendship and business. The group joined Soro Yiriwaso in order to strengthen their financial capacity so that they could better run their businesses, and they are on their 2nd loan. The group members sell beauty products, charcoal, cups, soap, condiments and various other items.

Souadou (the woman sitting in the front in the picture) sells condiments. She plans to use her loan to buy 2 bags of onions, 1 box of Maggi stock cubes, 1 bag of salt, 1 box of tomato concentrate and a package of various condiments (aubergines, garlic, cabbage and pepper) from the wholesalers in Bougouni. She makes her sales at the market and from her home, for cash or credit, to a retail clientèle made up of men and women. She expects to make an average monthly profit of 30 000 francs, which will be reinvested in her business and used to take care of healthcare expenses and repay the loan.

Le groupe Bilakoro est constitué de 7 femmes mariées et 2 veuves qui ont une moyenne d’âge de 41 ans et 4 enfants. Elles vivent la plupart dans des familles traditionnelles dans le quartier Niebala de la ville de Bougouni.
Elles se sont connues à travers des liens de voisinage, d’amitié et de commerce. Pour renforcer leur capacité financière afin de mieux faire leur commerce, elles ont adhéré à l’institution de microfinance Soro Yiriwaso avec laquelle elles sont à leur deuxième prêt. Ce groupe de femmes fait le commerce de cosmétiques, de charbon de bois, de tasses, du savon, des condiments et des articles divers.
Souadou, qui est la seule assise devant, fait l’achat vente de condiments. Elle compte acheter avec son prêt, 2 sacs d’oignon, 1 carton de cube maggi, 1 sac de sel, 1 carton de concentrée de tomate et un colis de divers condiments (aubergines, ail, choux et poivre) avec les grossistes de Bougouni. Elle effectue ses ventes au marché et à domicile, en détail au comptant et à crédit à une clientèle composée d’hommes et de femmes.
Elle envisage réaliser un bénéfice mensuel moyen de 30.000FCFA qui sera investi dans les activités, pour les frais de santé et rembourser le prêt.

Soro Yiriwaso is a microfinance institution that works primarily in rural and semi-urban areas of Mali to provide underprivileged communities with access to financial services.The organization facilitates access for disadvantaged clients, particularly women, to new resources and services, fostering solidarity and cooperation among its clients. Kiva lenders’ funds will enable Soro Yiriwaso to expand its outreach and target even more underserved Malians involved in business and agriculture.

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
