Ton is one of the few pioneering Mlabri men who have learned how to weave hammocks and he is a remarkably skilled weaver, among his many talents.
While Mr. Ton was one of the first of the Yellow Leaf people to become comfortable among other groups, he is proud to have stayed among his own tribe and is recognized as a leader within the village.
He holds a unique position within the Mlabri community- while many Mlabri are shy and reclusive, he is a communications specialist! As a young man, he spent many years working for local Northern Thai villagers and developed an enviable fluency in Thai. He is often a spokesperson and “go-between” for the Mlabri and neighboring communities.
He has pursued many new opportunities in order to provide for his family, which he believes is an important duty for a husband and father.
With this loan, he will be able to provide stability and security throughout the coming year.
About Yellow Leaf Hammocks
Yellow Leaf Hammocks is a for-profit social enterprise that trains and supports artisan weavers as they create high-margin luxury hammocks. By laying the foundation for a sustainable micro-economy, the organization is helping alleviate poverty, social injustice and environmental degradation for rural hill tribes in northern Thailand. The enterprise is a wholesale hammock seller that distributes its products through retail boutiques and e-commerce websites.
Kiva lenders’ funds are used to help artisans buy the raw materials to make hammocks. Additionally, the funds are used to expand the distribution network to increase hammock sales globally.
Yellow Leaf Hammocks joined Kiva through our Experimental Partnership Program, and has therefore received a lighter level of due diligence. Accordingly, loans associated with this partner carry a higher level of risk than typical Kiva loans.
