Ruth is a 49-year-old farmer in Kisii county, in Kenya, where she lives with her husband and two children, both of whom are schooling. She has been in farming for the past six years, producing bananas, potatoes, maize, milk, and beans, which she sells at the local market in her area.
Ruth is requesting a KES 62,400 loan from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow which will produce more milk and generate more income that she will use to boost her livelihood and pay for her children's schooling. She aspires to have four dairy cows in the next five years.
Pests, diseases, and poor road networks are her major challenges in farming. Ruth is grateful to Juhudi Kilimo for funding the loan.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
