Doris is a 48-year-old farmer who lives in Nkubu county, Kenya. She and her husband have two children, one of whom is still at school. She has been in farming for the past fifteen years, producing french beans, fruits and milk, which she sells at the local market in her area. Crop failure, pests and diseases are the major challenges for her farming.
Doris is requesting a 60,000 Kenyan shillings (KES) loan from Juhudi Kilimo to venture into poultry farming, which will help her in generating more income to boost her family's livelihood. She will use some of the money to pay for her children's schooling and she aspires to be the leading supplier of her agricultural products in the area in the next five years.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
