Catalina, age 49, is a farmer. She is widowed and lives in Cabunga-an, Clarin, Misamis Occidental, with her three children. To make a living, Catalina plants and harvests banana and coconuts, which she then offers for sale. Catalina has been farming for 25 years and earns 8,000 Philippine pesos (PHP) a month from these activities.
In 2007, Catalina joined GDMPC. Catalina is asking for a new loan of 10,000 PHP which will be used to purchase fertilizers such as manure. She plans to save money from her business as a reserve for future emergencies.
Gata Daku Multi-Purpose Cooperative (GDMPC) was founded in 1992 by 32 farmer-members to empower people by providing livelihood opportunities and other support services. Today, it has over 15,000 members located in upland, lowland and coastal regions of the Philippines, and offers credit, savings, education, and various social services.
