Sophy is 33 years old and the only breadwinner in a family consisting of five children, some of whom are in school and some of whom are too young for schooling. To sustain his family, he does rice farming on three hectares of farmland as his main income and plants vegetables as a secondary source of income. His original loan with VisionFund (Kiva’s partner) was five loan cycles ago. He has repaid the past loan completely; this has helped him to better support his rice farm and returned him a good income to maintain his living. Now, he is applying for a new loan. He is going to use his loan to increase his savings to buy a mini-tractor for his rice farming business. He hopes this purchase will help him to grow his rice in a timely and productive manner.
About VisionFund Cambodia
VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.
Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
