Las Del Centro Group (the name means "the women from the centre") is starting its first cycle with field partner Pro Mujer, in the framework of the focus centre of Achacachi. It has nine members and an executive board, with Teofila as president. The members of the group are engaged in various activities, among them cheese sales, chuño (a freeze-dried potato product) sales, fruits and jelly sales, dress sewing, and clothing sales. This loan will thus benefit a group of very small entrepreneurs with diverse businesses. Teofila tells us that this is the first time she works with Pro Mujer. She got to know this field partner thanks to its spokesperson, who came to visit her at her house. Teofila is a cheesemonger, a trade she learned from her parents when she was young. Now that she is 68, she still keeps at it and produces cheese. She wants to take out a loan in order to increase her working capital and buy a milk cow in a nearby village, at a very good price. Afterwards, she will be able to sell her cheese in the city of El Alto. The income Teofila derives from her business enables her to help with household expenses, since she is married and has four children. When asked what she likes about working with Pro Mujer, she talks about the training received on topics such as health and credit options.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
