Maria Santos
María is a hardworking woman together with her husband and her two children. They make a living farming and producing basic grains. She learned to farm more than 30 years ago as her parents were those who taught her to plant corn and beans. She plants her crops 300 meters from her home and she walks there everyday. María was not able to study in her youth and her dream is to educate her two children so that they can have a better quality of life and a higher level of education. Her children help her in planting basic grains during their vacations and when they come home from school in the afternoon. Her husband also helps her.

María is currently requesting help to purchase a solar panel, which she has longed for for some time. Where she lives there is no electric power and for a long time she has struggled with her domestic and daily tasks with the light from a candle and/or sticks of pine wood.

Her dream is to get up early in the mornings and press a button that will illuminate her humble home. She also hopes that her children will experience a major change as they will be able to study and do their student projects at night.

More information about this loan

These loans are designed for women who live in communities that do not have electricity, and where the government does not plan to install electricity for at least five years. This financing enables them to purchase solar panels ranging from 36 to 75 watts. COMIXMUL has partnered with an established solar company in Honduras to install the panels and provide maintenance when required. The panels themselves are guaranteed for 25 years. Historically, COMIXMUL has had significant demand for this product that it has been unable to meet. Thanks to Kiva, COMIXMUL will be able to expand access to solar technology to more borrowers.
