Simon is a 42-year-old farmer in Kitale county in Kenya, where he lives with his wife and four children, who are all schooling. He has been farming for two years, producing maize, beans, and poultry products and he wants to venture into dairy farming. He runs a posho mill (where maize is ground) as an additional source of income.
Simon is requesting a KES 62,400 loan from Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. This will give him more milk produce and earn him extra income to assist in boosting his livelihood and paying for his children’s education. He aspires to have five acres of land and three dairy cows in the next five years. Poor prices and unreliable workers are his major challenges in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
