Zipporah is 29 years old and has been in active farming for five years in her rural home in Central Kenya. Her farm produces tea, bananas, maize and cabbage. She also runs a tailoring business for additional income. She is single with one child who is four years old.
Zipporah has requested a loan of 20,000 KES from Juhudi Kilimo to help her buy piglets for a venture into pig farming. She hopes to gain more income and establish a big pork butchery within the local market. She believes she will be able to improve her family's living standard and educate her child.
Zipporah notes the main challenge is the inadequacy of funds for smallholder farmers.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
About Juhudi Kilimo:
Juhudi Kilimo is a for-profit social enterprise working with small-holder farmers in Kenya to finance purchases of dairy cows, chickens, agricultural equipment, and other assets that create immediate cash flow. Many of the assets are insured to prevent devastating business losses, and targeted technical assistance is provided to farmers, from agricultural training to basic book keeping and local market research.
