Savath's Group
In this Group: Savath, Tem, Nary
Savath, 34 years old, is a villager residing in a rural area of Battambang province’s Ek Phnom district in Cambodia. She is married and has three dependent kids, all of whom are school-aged children. To support the family, Savath works as a rice farmer while her husband works as a fisherman to complement the income. This industrious couple can earn approximately 27,000 KHR per day and saves around 9,000 KHR after canceling out the daily expenses.

This will be Savath’s eighth time requesting loan via VisionFund (Kiva’s partner). Savath stated that via the help that she received in the form of the previous loans she was able to improve her family’s lifestyle and sufficiently meet the family’s needs. Now she is leading a loan group of three female members to apply for a new loan with VisionFund in the amount of 1,200,000 KHR each. As a group representative, Savath will use her loan portion to support her rice-growing business by purchasing fertilizer and her husband’s business, fish-catching business, by purchasing fishing materials such as fish traps and cast nets.

This hard-working mother (Savath) has a dream of being able to run a new business, which is selling grocery items, in the hope of generating even more income to the family. This new requested loan portion will have a positive effect on her family’s living condition and family’s income. She will also be able to utilize the anticipated income to further her beloved kids’ education.

About VisionFund Cambodia

VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.

Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
