Pictured above are teachers of a primary school in Kenema city, in eastern Sierra Leone. This group of teachers has come to SMT, a partner of based in Makeni, northern Sierra Leone, to request a loan of 10,100,000 SLL for the entire group. With the help of this loan, each of these teachers will be able to meet their immediate financial challenges and at the end of each month, each will repay the loan using their monthly salaries. It is the school’s bursar who is directly responsible for doing the deducations and making the repayments on their behalf.

Francis is the featured leader of this group of teachers. He is 49 years of age. A native of Koyomaniji, in eastern Sierra Leone. He is married to a trader and the couple has 7 children – 1 in primary school and 6 in college. Francis has been a teacher for 28 years now. In addition to his teaching profession, he also sells products like cola (a chewing nut very popular in West Africa) coffee, cocoa, etc. He has been selling for 3 years now. With the help of this loan, Francis is going to buy the above mentioned items in large quantities to add to his business.

About Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT)

Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT) is Kiva’s oldest field partner in Sierra Leone. SMT began operations in 2002 as a microcredit program of the NGO Child Fund Sierra Leone under a USAID program to assist the reintegration of ex combatants back into their communities. This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
