Port S., 44 years old, lives in Kampong Cham Province where she has owned her farm since 1985. Both she and her husband are traditional rice farmers, earning a little less than $3 per day combined. They have a large family of nine children, a necessity for rural farming families as children bring in much needed income once they can work and will care for the parents in their old age. Six of the children are still single, and only the oldest of this group currently works outside the farm, operating a motor-taxi for about $1.50 per day. Port S. hopes to support her next oldest son living at home to enter the same profession and is therefore requesting a loan to purchase a motor-bike for him.
