The “Las Perlas” (Pearls) communal bank has 8 members, seven women and one man. The bank president is Deisy, 40. She’s married and has three children aged 15, 12 and 8; all attend school. She sells groceries, an activity she’s been in for many years. Her store is in La Guardia and she will use the loan to buy groceries like sugar, rice and oil in quantity and at wholesale. Her reason for requesting this loan is that she lacks capital to buy merchandise to stock her store and this is the only activity she has that makes it possible for her to support herself and support her family which is why she feels happy and grateful to the institution for the support provided.

This is a Group Loan
In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
