Lidia Del Socorro
Lidia sells mobile phones and clothes. She travels to the neighboring country of Panama to buy the merchandise she sells to her customers on credit and for cash. This is how she’s gradually been growing alongside her husband who is currently not working because he was in an accident. She covers all household expenses with help from her nine children eight of whom are married and independent; she only has a 14-year-old still in her care. Even with the difficulty her husband’s situation represents, she still wants to have a nice house so she will use this loan to make some room divisions and install a ceiling to live with her family more comfortably. To do so, she needs to buy drywall sheets, cement, sand, blocks, iron and to pay labor costs.

About Housing Loans

Many poor families cannot afford housing that meets their needs. When you make a housing loan on Kiva, you give people access to flexible capital to obtain or improve their homes. Better housing means better health, sanitation, and even educational outcomes for children. A house can also be much more for entrepreneurs who run businesses out of their homes. In this way, housing and small business loans on Kiva share a common purpose: to alleviate poverty and enable families to enjoy more stable lives.
