Rosemary is a resident of Kitale in Western Kenya where she lives with husband and five children who are all in school. She has been in farming for ten years and currently runs her farm with the help of one farmhand with milk, eggs and maize being her main produce for the local market.
Rosemary has requested a loan of 62,400 Kenyan Shillings (KES) from Kiva partner Juhudi Kilimo to buy and insure a dairy cow. She plans to have a dairy farm of five cows and rank among the major milk suppliers for the local markets. She says the sale of her milk produce will help improve the living standards of her family.
Rosemary notes animal feeds shortage remains the major challenge especially with dairy farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
