Creating a more equitable world takes a lot of time and energy, but at Kiva we’re in it for the long haul. 100% of money lent on Kiva goes to funding loans. That means we rely on donations from people like you to make this work possible. For a limited time, if you donate $35 or more, a $25 bonus will be added to your account (you’ll get an email once it’s there).

Susan's story

21-yer-old Susana is a determined woman. She lives in her parents’ house with Yolanda, her mother, Walter, her father, and José, her brother. She studies civil engineering in a prestigious university, where she has to pay her own tuition. This is why she started with the business of selling household products.

After some time she saved enough to open a hardware store, which is only starting, but which with her effort she hopes to make grow. Currently her main source of income comes from selling of drinks and food. She teamed up with her mother to open up a space in her house every Sunday to serve her customers. Additionally there is a fair that takes place in the street in which she lives. This contributes to her revenues, as her business is always very busy.

She wishes to increase her profits, as she wants to finish her studies and start new projects. She knows that in order to achieve this she needs to save a certain amount of money. She is part of the communal bank “IDME”, and from which she has been able to get 10 loans throughout the years to improve her business by managing the money in a wise way. She promises to keep paying her dues. Susana is glad to be able part of this organization, where the members are solidary, “like a family”, she affirms. Susana will invest her loan in the purchase of several boxes of drinks of every type because it is during Christmas time that consumption of her products is the highest.
