The “NUEVA FORTALEZA” Community Association will begin its first cycle with Pro Mujer, as part of the Los Andes focus group. The group is made up of six members and directed by a board of directors where Ximena serves as the president. The members have different businesses, including: clothing sales, brush sales, apron making, food sales, rope manufacture, and bread sales.

This loan will benefit their small companies, including Ximena. This is her first time with Pro Mujer and she joined after being invited by a friend who is also a member. She has a food business which used to belong to her mother but now [Ximena] runs it.

This loan will be to increase her working capital (so that she buy bags of noodles at fairs in El Alto). She will later sell her food from her stall. This type of work allows her to generate income so that she can support her household; she is in a common law marriage and has two children.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she says that she likes the training in credit and health.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
