Gladys is a 53-year-old farmer in Nkubu county in Kenya, where she lives with her husband and three children. Two of her children are still in school. She has been farming for the past ten years producing bananas, maize, potatoes and coffee, which she sells at the local market in her area.
She is requesting a 45,000 KES loan from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase irrigation equipment that will help her water her crops even during dry spells. This will result in better production for her crops and thus more income and improved living standards. She will use some of the money to pay for her children's college fees. She plans to have doubled her business in the next five years.
Poor climate conditions and inflation are her major challenges in farming.
Gladys is grateful to Juhudi Kilimo for helping her boost her productivity.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
