Alice is 30 years old. She is married and has four children. She and her husband earn their income through farming. They grow maize, beans, coffee, and cassava. They also keep cows and pigs.
Alice looks forward to becoming a Community Knowledge Worker (CKW). As a CKW, she will use the materials in her 'business-in-a-box' (smartphone, solar charging set, and weighing scale) to disseminate vital agricultural information to the other members of her village, helping them to improve their crop yields and to increase their incomes.
With the additional money that she will earn as a CKW, Alice will pay school fees for her children. She dreams of becoming an agriculture specialist.
More information about this loan
This loan is part of Grameen Foundation's AppLab program and Community Knowledge Worker initiative, providing borrowers with mobile phones, solar chargers and other equipment to become knowledge centers for their smallholder farming communities.
With these tools, community knowledge workers can help their neighbors access information and advice to improve their crop yields, connect with markets and generate more income. They can also conduct mobile surveys to help local organizations better meet farmers' needs. Community knowledge workers make monthly salaries based on the number of surveys they collect, enabling them to repay Grameen for the equipment.
This Kiva loan will be used to provide borrowers with needed goods or services, as opposed to cash or financial credit
