Alicia is a young woman who lives in the community of Quebradas, 10 km from Mizque province in the department of Cochabamba. She has a son but had to leave the father because of his mistreatment of them both. Now Alicia has the sole responsibility of caring for and feeding her son.
Because of the recent drought the potatoes which she grows on her small parcel of land did not mature properly. This natural disaster resulted in a diminished income, money that she was expecting.
Alicia is a well-liked and respected person in the community where she lives because of her dedication to her son and to her work. Sometimes she even has to take on day labouring jobs on the land to earn a little money to care for her son. She is seeking a loan to buy peanut and bean seeds and organic fertilizer to improve her crops. In this way she will increase production and earn more money. In turn this will lead to an improved standard of living and her son will be better able to attend school. The loan will help Alicia and her son greatly with their difficult life.
