Cleophas is 24 years old and married. He is a small-scale farmer from Kitale county in western Kenya. He has been practicing mixed farming for five years now and has one employee. He sells his farm produce, which includes milk and eggs, to the local market. He solely depends on the income from his farm to meet his basic needs. He faces the challenge of diseases which affects his poultry farm and lowers his egg production.
Cleophas has made a loan request of 31,200 KES ( Kenyan shillings) to purchase and insure a dairy cow. This loan will enable him to acquire a quality dairy cow that will produce enough milk for domestic consumption and sale. The proceeds from the sale of milk will help him improve the livelihood of his young family. He hopes to expand his dairy farm by acquiring additional dairy cows in the near future.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
