Nan, a local farmer from Tbaung Khmum district of Cambodia, is also a mother of five children. She is 55 years old and works for a living, managing one hectare of rice cultivation and two and half hectares of cabbage growing. She is able to earn up to 23,000 KHR per day from the current business that she has been with for 37 years.

Joining a group of three, Nan is the leader. The entire members in her group are first-time clients with Kiva's partner, VisionFund. Three of them are seeking for 1,000,000 KHR each. Nan is going to use her portion to buy cabbage seeds for growing. She hopes this purchase will promptly support her to grow her vegetables timely so that she can make more profits for her family.

VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.

Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee.
