Jesus and his daughter Jessica are the owners of a jewelry repair business in San Diego. Jesus learned the skill of fixing antique watches and clocks back in Mexico, their home country. He has over 20 years of experience in the industry.
After working for a jewelry store in San Diego for 12 years, he was laid off during the recent recession. With no hopes of finding a job within his industry, he decided to take a job as a janitor in the evenings. The job gave him and his family a stable source of income and allowed him to try to start his own jewelry repair business from home.
Jesus now operates the business together with his daughter from a small store front location. During the day, Jesus teaches his daughter the precise skills required for watch repair, with the dream that she can one day take over the business.
He still maintains his janitor job in the evenings, working many hours each day to continue to grow and further improve the life of his family.
Their $5,000 Kiva loan will give Jesus and Jessica the opportunity to purchase extra inventory so they can diversify their product and service offerings in time for the holiday season. They will also be able to purchase an engraving machine, which will generate extra income.
