Mercy is a 52-year-old farmer in Nkubu County in Kenya, where she lives with her husband and three children, who are all schooling. She has been in farming for over twenty-five years, producing tea, maize and peas, which she sells at the local market in her area.
She is requesting a 45,000 KES loan to buy dairy goats. From selling the milk, she will be able to get extra income to help her uplift her living standards and pay for her children's school fees.
She plans to have bought two acres of land in the next five years.
Insecurity and the high cost of feeds are her major challenges in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
