The "Estrellas de Sajama" Communal Bank will begin its thirty-second cycle with Pro Mujer as part of the Cascada Regional Office. It is made up of twelve members led by a board of directors with Ana serving as president. The communal bank's members support themselves with a variety of businesses, including sewing petticoats, book sales, sale of "masitas" [small savory pastries in a variety of flavors] and "empanadas" [savory stuffed pastries], candy sales, juice sales, coffee sales, grain sales, macramé-making, grocery sales, sale of "rellenos" [stuffed mashed potato fritters], and a sewing workshop.

The loan that the group will take out will benefit small micro-entrepreneurs like Ana. She explains that she joined Pro Mujer six years ago, having been invited by a relative who is a member of the institution. Currently, she has a business preparing and selling masitas. She says that she started this business years ago by selling cookies. Later, she learned to make some masitas, which were a hit in her business. To specialize in that area, she took classes to diversify her sales.

The loan that she will now take out is for the purchase of equipment—like a mixer—that she will buy from wholesale sellers and then set up in her business for the preparation of her products. Her work allows her to generate income to support herself and her family economically, since she is a single mother of one son.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, she responds that she likes the collateral-free loans and the advice.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
