Joyce is a 29-year-old farmer in the Litein County area of Kenya, where she lives with her husband and three children. Only two of them are schooling.
She has been in farming for eight years, producing potatoes, beans, milk and tea, which she sells to the people around her locality. She also does tailoring as an additional source of income.
She is requesting a 65,000 KES loan from Juhudi Kilimo to purchase materials for constructing a zero grazing unit (an enclosure in which the cows are fed). That will help her increase her milk production and her family's livelihood, and also pay school fees for her children.
She aspires to have three other quality dairy cows producing fifteen litres of milk each in the next five years.
Pests and diseases are her major challenges in farming.
Joyce is very grateful to Juhudi Kilimo for the support through giving out loans.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
