A group of coworkers and friends formed Centro de Salud de Urubamba Communal Bank in the district and province of Urubamba. The communal bank has been operating for six months and it's well organized. The bank is made up of people who are always looking for opportunities to get ahead and, with their daily efforts, give their children a better future. Most of the members are health professionals such as nurses, aides, and doctors. All these professionals work in a health clinic in the city of Urubamba.

Flor María was born in the city of Cusco but currently lives in Urubamba where she works. She's 41 years old and married, and has two children from this relationship. She has been an oral surgeon for 14 years and it's going very well for her. She works as a dentist in a health center but in her free time she practices independently, doing treatments, preventive care, extractions, and other procedures.

Now she needs a loan to buy amalgam, resin, and other work materials.

Her dream is to open a dental clinic. The members in general are grateful for their opportunity and pledge to make their various payments on time. (The member who appears at the bottom of the photograph asked the board permission to arrive late to the meeting.)

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
