The “Women of Clarity” communal bank has launched its 1st loan cycle with Pro Mujer, as part of the Achacachi Focal Center. The bank is composed of 10 members and is led by a board of directors with Mrs. Carmen Rosa as President. The businesses the communal association's members pursue are varied. Among these are: selling shoes, CDs, fish, and cell phones; making traditional skirts, and buying fish nets.

The loan they are requesting will benefit micro-enterprises, including the business of member Mrs. Carmen Rosa. She says this is the 1st time she has worked through Pro Mujer, having joined at the invitation of a promoter from that institution. Currently, Carmen's business makes traditional skirts to measure. She says she learned the business while working in a seamstress shop; then she decided to start her own shop.

The loan she is soliciting will increase her capital for purchasing cloth from wholesalers. After making the skirts, Carmen will distribute them to stores on request. This type of work allows her to generate resources to help, as much as possible, with household expenses, since she lives in a common law marriage and has a son.

When asked what she likes about Pro Mujer, Carmen Rosa responded that she especially likes the health program.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
