This communal bank is called “Sonrisas Frente al Mar” (Smiles Before the Sea) and it has 20 members who carry out a variety of lines of work among which are: herb sales, store, vacuum packed potatoes, knitting, turnover sales, artisanal chocolate sales, clothing sales, hot-dog with salad sales and services, among others. All are from the city of Valparaíso.

Juan is communal bank treasurer and in the photo he’s seated in the last row, second from left to right. His hair is short and he has a swarthy complexion. He’s been a baker and pastry chef for the last five years. He comments that he works from home where he set up his workshop. He works Monday to Sunday and he arranges his schedule according to availability. He makes ‘alfajores’ [filled sesame seed pastries], truffles, cakes, Bundt cakes, lemon pies, bread, and turnovers that he sells at home and sometimes he delivers the pastries and baked goods to his customers. He buys merchandise and ingredients as needed in Valparaíso and Villa Alemana in stores where he gets the merchandise at low cost which is economically advantageous for him.

He will use the loan to buy sacks of flour, plastic trays, shredded coconut, powdered sugar, glazing chocolate, marmalade, eggs, sugar beads and condensed milk. One of Juan’s goals is to open a locale with all proper, up-to-date documentation to tend to all his clientele and continue receiving even more to generate higher income that will lead to improved quality of life.

Juan lives with his brother who is also a member of the communal bank. His dream on a work level is to have his own locale to sell his merchandise in and on a personal level to stay in good health to continue working.

He is very happy and grateful for the opportunity Fondo Esperanza is giving him because it will allow him to invest in his business. He comments that there is very good communication among the communal bank members and on the other hand, the training has been very useful to learn new sales and bookkeeping strategies.

Valparaíso is located 120 kilometers northeast of Santiago. It’s the regional capital and also the seat of the country’s legislative branch of government. It’s the nation’s main port and it has a variety of beautiful, picturesque places, like Nobel Laureate Pablo Neruda’s house, for example.

Este Banco Comunal se llama “ Sonrisas frente al mar” está conformado por 20 emprendedores quienes se dedican a diferentes rubros entre los cuales se encuentran; venta de yerbas, almacén, fabricación de papas al vacio, tejidos, venta de empanadas, venta chocolates artesanales, venta de ropa, venta de completos , servicios entre otros. Todos ellos pertenecientes a la ciudad de Valparaíso.
Juan, tesorero del grupo del Banco Comunal, quien en la foto se encuentra sentado en última fila, ocupando el segundo lugar de izquierda a derecha, su cabello lo usa corto y su tez es de color trigueña.
El se dedica al rubro de pastelería y panadería, desde hace 5 años. Comenta que trabaja en su casa, donde habilito un taller, trabaja de lunes a domingo y su horario lo distribuye de acuerdo a su disponibilidad. Realiza alfajores, trufas, queques, kuchen, pie de limón, pan, empanadas, donde vende en su domicilio y otras veces es el quien se desplaza hacia su clientela para la entrega de pastelería y panadería.
La mercadería e insumos que va necesitando los compra en las ciudades de Valparaíso y Villa Alemana en locales donde encuentra su mercadería a bajo costo, por lo tanto conveniente económicamente.
Con el crédito comprará sacos de harina, bandejas plásticas, coco rayado, azúcar flor, chocolates de cobertura, mermeladas, huevos, mostacilla, manjar.
Una de las metas de Juan es instalar un local establecidos con la documentación al dia, y atender a toda su clientela y seguir recibiendo a mas para generar mayores ingresos, así con esto optar a una mejor calidad de vida.
Juan vive junto a su hermano quien también pertenece al Banco Comunal. Sus sueños a nivel laboral es tener su local para ofrecer su mercadería a su clientela, y a nivel personal tener buena salud para seguir trabajando.
El se encuentra muy contento y agradecido de la oportunidad brindada por Fondo Esperanza, ya que le permitirá invertir en su negocio. Respecto al grupo del Banco Comunal del cual forma parte, comenta que en éste existe muy buena comunicación. Por otro lado las capacitaciones, le ha servido para aprender nuevas estrategias de venta y contabilidad.
Valparaíso está situado a 120 kilómetros al noroeste de Santiago. Es la capital regional y además sede del poder legislativo del país. Es el primer puerto de la nación y ofrece gran variedad de lugares hermosos y pintorescos, como por ejemplo la casa del poeta Pablo Neruda, ganador del Premio Nobel.

About Fondo Esperanza

Fondo Esperanza (FE) is a private non-profit organization that supports entrepreneurship by providing micro-credit and training to people living in poverty in well over 100 cities throughout Chile. By providing these services, FE aims to improve the living conditions of the entrepreneurs and their families. In 2010, FE provided loans to more than 41,000 entrepreneurs. It utilizes a communal banking model in which groups of 18 to 25 clients meet on regularly and guarantee each other’s loans. The members use their portion of the loan to create or expand their own businesses. In the group meetings, clients receive training though the FE Entrepreneurship School, which enhances clients’ personal and business skills and ability to work in groups.

The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.
