Ly is a 39-year-old mother of four schoolchildren. She and her husband, a security guard, live in the Sa Ang district of Kandal province. For the past twenty years Ly has farmed rice and grown bitter melon and taro in her vegetable garden. This labor earns her almost 43,000 KHR from which she is able to save about 11,000 KHR after expenses. Ly is now applying for a 1,000 USD loan through VisionFund. She is going to use the money to buy fertilizer and insecticides and to pay for plowing fees. A portion of it will also be applied toward the purchase of a water pump. Ly hopes this loan will help her boost her crop production and multiply her income. With success, she will be able to repay the loan and afford to buy clothes and decent food for her children.
About VisionFund Cambodia
VisionFund Cambodia is a Christian organization and microfinance institution that provides small loans and other financial services to improve the lives of children, empower poor women and their families, and grow successful businesses. The organization works primarily in rural parts of Cambodia and has distinguished itself by targeting the very poor who require smaller loan sizes, regardless of religious beliefs, gender or ethnic background.
Kiva lenders’ funds will help the organization to expand into the northeastern provinces of the country, which have historically been underserved and difficult to reach with financial services.
