Silvia is a strong-willed young woman who works to support her family. Even though she's quite young, her mother and siblings depend on her support. In the past, her father had a stall selling candies and treats outside the grounds of a school, but some time ago he died and since then the business has been Silvia's responsibility. Through this business, she's been able to overcome the financial hardships that came with her father's death and that's why she works hard every day to make it grow and generate greater income for her home. As she doesn't have that much capital on hand, she's currently having a lot of trouble keeping her store stocked up.
That's why she's seeking a loan to buy candies to stock her business and increase the variety of items she can offer to her customers, hopefully leading to increased sales. Her dream is to establish her business in a permanent location, which would allow her to considerably improve her working conditions and also improve her family's quality of life, offering greater opportunities to advance.
This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
