Marleny
Marleny started working two years ago selling frozen desserts primarily because her husband fell into poor health and could no longer find work. They needed to find an alternative source of income in order to keep up with the costs of their home where they live together with their three children. She learned the business and met the supplier through an acquaintance, and with a little capital she started her business selling desserts which she runs out of her own home. The biggest challenge is a lack of capital which prevents her from being able to meet all of her customers' orders, but in looking to overcome this obstacle Marleny is requesting a loan that will allow her to purchase a refrigerator and an assortment of frozen treats to improve her sales.

She hopes to be able to transplant her business to another location that will allow her to provide a greater variety to her customers and in doing so increase her revenue considerably. She also dreams of providing for the good health of her husband and for a better quality of life at home for her children.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
