Maria Celina
María is a woman who is noted for wanting to help others which has led her to help many in her sector who were in dire straits and who now can count on having employment. About 17 years ago María set up her sewing workshop at home looking for a way to generate family income.

Seeing that the business was doing well and was growing, she started to generate employment that she’d offer to single mother, heads of household in her sector. Now, her workshop is a larger shop and she has large customer orders. However, due to María's limited economic resources she’s looking for financing to be able to buy thread, needles and fabric and to be able to service the sewing machines needed to fill her pending customer orders.

Her dream is to continue moving the workshop ahead and to continue generating more jobs for single mother, heads of household who need to earn income. In addition, she hopes her home consisting of her husband and three children will have better quality of life.

Important Information

This loan is structured on Kiva as a bullet loan, which means a single payment is required at the end of the loan term. By Colombian law, Kiva's partner Interactuar is required to offer borrowers loans with a variable interest rate that fluctuates with the market rate. Because fixed monthly payments are applied first to interest and then to principal, Interactuar is unable to predict upfront what portion of each repayment would go towards the loan principal. This creates a challenge with Kiva's system, which doesn't allow for unpredictable principal payments, and can result in some Interactuar clients appearing falsely delinquent. To remedy this, the loan has an end-of-term repayment plan on Kiva, but the borrower will continue scheduled monthly repayments to Interactuar, who will then pass along the principal amount to Kiva lenders. This means that you may see repayments made on this loan throughout the repayment term, as opposed to receiving repayment in full at the end of the loan term.
