21 people are part of the association “Walking to the Future” that belongs to the focal centre of Villa Exaltacion in the city of El Alto.

There are different activities in the group, for example clothes sales, hand knitted sweaters, general stores, but the main activity is food.

Francisca sells beef meat, Teresa prepares a variety of lunches, Julia sells fast food (burgers and French fries with sliced hot dog sausages). However, with the sale of these items they can only make the minimum income to cover their daily expenses and rent, not only for their houses but also for their businesses; they need more working capital to hire helpers and expand their businesses and this way make more income and improve their quality of life.

Translated from Spanish by Sofia Burt, Kiva Volunteer.

Additional Information

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
