Mbathie's Group
In this Group: Mbathie, Coura
These two women are both friends and neighbours, and have formed a group. Their main activities are business and animal fattening. Mbathie is 59 years old, a married mother of five girls and three boys. She is seated on the left hand chair in the photo. She is a trader; she buys sheep and ewes which she rears. When the ewe has her lambs, she sells the males. Where there are both males and females, she sells the ewe and rears the young females until maturity, when she repeats the process.
This loan will allow her to buy five sheep and three ewes, which she will rear; it will also allow her to buy feed and medication for the animals. With the profits, she will help her family - paying for schooling, contributing to the daily expenses and the health of the children. In addition, she will use the profits to pay the interest on the loan, and to grow her savings.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
