Ednita, 23, is single and lives with her parents and siblings. With her loan, she intends to buy a breeding sow. She will also buy food for the growth of the piglets and food for the sows, so that they can be strong and produce enough milk. With this money, she hopes to have piglets who are well developed once they are weaned. The money she makes will be invested in improving the pig pen and meeting some of her personal goals, such as improving her education and bettering her quality of life. This is the first loan she has received from FUDECOSUR. She had never had a loan from state banks, but FUDECOSUR gave her the loan with less difficulty and with a much lower interest rate.

More information about this loan

FUDECOSUR works in one of the poorest regions of Costa Rica, where microfinance institutions (MFIs) are scarce or have a hard time keeping up with demand for small loans. By providing mostly agricultural loans, FUDECOSUR reaches rural borrowers that many MFIs consider to be too risky. However, this has also made it more difficult for the organization to find stable sources of capital to lend. Kiva's flexible, risk-tolerant capital plays a critical role in helping FUDECOSUR grow its portfolio and support even more borrowers.
