Abel is married and has two children who are in school. They live in their own home which consists of three rooms. The house is located in the District of Alto San Pedro in the city of La Paz.

Abel currently works as an interior decorator for more than eight hours a day. This is the only job he has in order to cover the cost of food, education, and basic services for his family. The loan he is requesting will be used to buy supplies (vegetables, potatoes, meat, onions, and other items) for the gastronomy courses that his daughter is taking at a culinary institute. She has to present a few dishes for her exam, but Abel is not able to cover this expense with what little he earns.

Abel’s dream is to improve his earnings so that he can pay for his children’s educational expenses. He does not have access to additional income because his wife moved abroad. This is the second time he has requested a loan from IMPRO, but the first time with Kiva.

Additional Information

IMPRO is a small non-profit organization that has been offering micro credit to the working poor in the Bolivian cities of La Paz and El Alto since 1995. IMPRO’s goal is to fight poverty by offering loans to small business owners who cannot access credit through the regular banking system due to a lack of guarantees or collateral.

To ensure that everyone has access to credit, IMPRO maintains a low interest rate by minimizing operational costs. IMPRO’s partnership with Kiva, which began in 2007, has allowed IMPRO to expand its services while maintaining these low interest rates.
