Miguel
Miguel is a farmer in the Huatusco, Veracruz area. He is 56 years old. He lives in his own house and is single. He has grown coffee for quite a long time, since from childhood his father taught him everything about this work. He produces organic coffee that he sells to the regional union of Huatusco. Miguel also works seasonally as a day laborer with other people to thus have an extra income. For Miguel, his parents are the most important thing. What he most wants is to help them advance. For this reason, he has decided to apply for a loan to improve his coffee farm with the purchase of fertilizers, to buy plants for renovation, and to pay for labor to care for the plants so that he can obtain a good harvest that will make it possible to improve his income as well as his quality of life. After the harvest, he would like to remodel his house so that his parents can live more comfortably.

Miguel es un agricultor de la zona de Huatusco, Ver. Cuenta con 56 años de edad vive en casa propia y es soltero, cultiva café desde hace ya mucho tiempo pues desde niño su padre le enseño todo lo relacionado con el oficio, es productor de café orgánico el cual vende a la Unión Regional de Huatusco. Miguel también trabaja por temporadas como jornalero con otras personas para así tener un ingreso extra. Para Miguel sus padres son lo más importante. Lo que mas quiere es ayudarlos a salir adelante. Por lo cual ha decidido pedir un crédito para mejorar su finca de café con la compra de fertilizantes, compra de plantas para renovación y para el pago de labores culturales de manera que con ello se pueda obtener una buena cosecha que hará posible que mejore sus ingresos así como también su calidad de vida. A él le gustaría pasando la cosecha remodelar su casa para que sus padres vivan más cómodamente.

These loans help farmers swap out their old coffee plants that are no longer producing at capacity for new plants. New plants generally take three years to produce at capacity, temporarily reducing crop yield. Given that the renewal process can be lengthy, please note that this loan may have a long repayment term with a built-in grace period.

La Union Regional de Pequeños Productores de Cafe Huatusco (or, La Union Regional) is a member-owned, Fair Trade-certified coffee cooperative based in the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Kiva helps fund loans for La Union Regional’s members, allowing them to plant more crops and convert to more profitable organic farming methods. La Union Regional is backed by Fair Trade USA and Green Mountain Coffee Roasters, which retails members’ coffee.
