Shakeela is a 30-year-old hardworking woman. She lives in Punjab, Pakistan with her husband and son. Her husband is a laborer but his income is too low to meet the basic expenses of his family.

Since 2006, Shakeela, by stitching clothes, has helped her husband to meet the household and children's education expenses. Now she is interested in continuing to grow her business by purchasing a new tailoring machine and tailoring materials like thread and clothing. For that reason, as a member of an eight-person lending group, she has requested a loan from Kiva partner BRAC Pakistan.

With the profits, she wants to build a new room in her house. Her dream of life is to live happily with her family in their own house. She is very thankful to KIVA and BRAC and says that BRAC is working very well and the staff is very co-operative.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
