Neelam is 46 years old. She is a hardworking and an independent woman who is living in Punjab, Pakistan, with her husband, two sons and two daughters. Both of her sons are doing jobs, while her husband is a gardener by profession. But his income is not enough to fulfill his family's needs and to meet household expenses. Since 2004, Neelam herself has been running a livestock business; her younger daughter helps her as well. Now she wants to grow her business by purchasing two more buffaloes.

For that purpose, as a member of seven-person lending group, she has requested a loan from Kiva partner BRAC Pakistan. With the profit amount, she is planning to purchase more animals like sheep, goats and cows, and she wishes to open a new dairy farm in the future. She says Salam and many thanks to BRAC Pakistan and Kiva both.

This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
