Hellen is a resident of Kitale in western Kenya, where she lives with her husband and one child aged 16 years. She has been in farming for seven years and runs her farm with the help of one farmhand. She currently produces tomatoes, kale and poultry for the local market.
Hellen has requested a loan of 41,600 Kenyan shillings (KES) from Juhudi Kilimo, which she will use to buy and insure a dairy cow. She believes the cow will improve her farming income and help her grow the business to adequately meet the family needs. She plans to acquire better grades of dairy cows in the future.
She says the high cost of production, rampant diseases and fluctuation in farming products within the local market remain the leading challenges in farming.
To facilitate a partnership between Kiva and Juhudi Kilimo, K-Rep Group (Juhudi Kilimo’s 100% owner) has guaranteed Kiva funds in the event of institutional default. Lenders should be aware that the risk of borrower default remains borne by the lender.
