“Arbre de Vie”, which means Tree of Life in English, is a group of 16 owners of small businesses chaired by Emmanuel. Its members are jointly liable for loans granted by Kiva to grow their businesses.

Emmanuel, married and age 36, operates a general store. His business is located to the southeast of the city of Lubumbashi. He started his business in 2010. Emmanuel is happy to be one of Hope’s clients. His dream is to expand through Hope’s loans for his business.

Due to the high demand in his community, he intends with the next loan to buy more goods for resale in order to meet client demand, and thereby generate additional profits. This will help him to achieve his plans to grow the business. It brings in a profit of about US$100 per week. Emmanuel is the father of six children whose ages are between 1 and 12 years old. Three of them go to school.

HOPE DRC targets small business owners who can use loans to increase their inventories or invest in assets that have the potential to increase their incomes. This is a Group Loan

In a group loan, each member of the group receives an individual loan but is part of a larger group of individuals. The group is there to provide support to the members and to provide a system of peer pressure, but groups may or may not be formally bound by a group guarantee. In cases where there is a group guarantee, members of the group are responsible for paying back the loans of their fellow group members in the case of delinquency or default.

Kiva's Field Partners typically feature one borrower from a group. The loan description, sector, and other attributes for a group loan profile are determined by the featured borrower's loan. The other members of the group are not required to use their loans for the same purpose.
