Mariam is married and has five children; only one of her children goes to school. She takes care of additional family members (grand children). She has applied for a loan of 1,000,000 Uganda shillings from MCDT-SACCO to buy more sacks of charcoal. She has been in this business for 10 years and works from home seven days a week. She sells to all categories of people by retail.
Mariam's major business challenges include thieves and seasonality. She is aspiring to see her business grow larger so that she can become a wholesaler. She also hopes to build rental houses. She resides in her own house and the family has access to electricity but not to piped water. Her monthly expenses include school fees and feeding the family.
