We are very pleased to present to you Mariama, a businesswoman in the clothing business in the eastern city of Koidu. A native of Carena Binkoro, Mariama is 30 years old and married to a building contractor. She and her husband have three children, who are attending primary and secondary schools.
Mariama has come to SMT, a Kiva partner with headquarters in Makeni, Northern Sierra Leone, to access a loan of 5,000,000 Sierra Leonean Leone. Mariama has been selling clothes, suitcases, jewelry, etc., for seven years now. She has requested this loan in order to buy merchandise in bulk to add to her current stock. This will lead to more sales, increased profits and improvements in her family’s well-being.
About Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT)
Salone Microfinance Trust (SMT) is Kiva’s oldest field partner in Sierra Leone. SMT began operations in 2002 as a microcredit program of the NGO Child Fund Sierra Leone under a USAID program to assist the reintegration of ex combatants back into their communities. Today, SMT offers group, agricultural, individual and salary loans to micro-entrepreneurs through six branches and one sub-branch in rural, urban, and peri-urban areas. By providing small loans and other financial services, SMT empowers poor clients to generate more income to help their families, improve their wellbeing, and create a more vibrant private small-business sector in Sierra Leone.
